Electric Cars and Energy Efficiency

San Jose City is a place where ideas and innovations are born.  'Start up' companies come to San Jose as they know there is a culture to support the birth and expansion of new technologies.

The City has a unique 'Demonstration Policy' It allows companies to demonstrate new ideas in a public setting, anything from buildings, fleets and processes.

A walk at lunch time uncovered cars at filling stations right across the road from Civic Hall.

San Jose was the first to demonstrate this technology which led to a federal grant of $37m putting Electric Vehicle Charging Stations in 9 cities.

Another initiative is the SV Energy Watch Program where they provide $1m in grant competitions around energy efficiency

  1. Soph do we have electrical vehicle charging stations anywhere in Aus? I don't think I've seen them anywhere, but surely?

  2. Hi Soph & Kelly

There is recharge (plug in) station in Glebe for Go Get car share vehicles. Was set up with the City of Sydney. The City was also proposing to install more in some of their car parks.

AusGrid (the electricity network company) has charge points for electric cars at its Silverwater training centre.

The other 'model' for electric car recharge is for battery replacement centres where you drive in and have the battery replaced in a couple of minutes. A company called Better Place has been working to set up a network in Israel, Denmark and Australia (starting in Canberra).

Whether plug in recharge or battery replacement will win out remains to be seen. Or maybe both will be here to stay. Either way there will be more of these in the future but hard to say how quickly this will happen.

    Cheers

    1. Hey Dave, yes interesting to see who wins out. I was told today that another 300 are going into more cities. I should find out the exact number that are now across California.
