Fitness Court

An outdoor gym I discovered today whilst cycling to the Golden Gate Bridge , sponsored by the National Fitness Campaign .  I talked to users who advised it was very easy to use with clear instructions for all levels, it was low maintenance, vandal proof and fun. At 7.30am there weren't many people there, but on my return cycle it was well utilised.
It reminds me of the outdoor gym at Manly Lagoon and the wide range of people who use it in many different ways.  People either meet to train on it in groups or simply stop for five minutes on their way past during a walk or run.

  1. Looks great Soph. At Warringah we're also looking at how to incorporate more outdoor equip for seniors in our existing playgrounds or new areas

This is great and the best part is that it can be moved around pretty easily.

  3. Yes, thanks for the comments, it was just BRILIANT. Bringing these fitness courts to public spaces obviously adds a new resource to parks to improving public health. Another dimension to get people moving and educated on how to live a more active life - the clear instructions made it easy for any novice.

  4. Hi Sophie
The outdoor fitness centre and gym equipment is great. While I was in South America there were many parks and playgrounds which had gym equipment and also outdoor fitness/dance classes. This initiative has been put in place to encourage people to exercise during lunch breaks before and after work. It would be great for Warringah to introduce something like that to create balance in our working lives.

  5. Hi again Sophie

Loving the Fitness Court of course! Have you got behind the cost of this in terms of capital and maintenance? That definitely would modernise most outdoor gyms currently provided by many Councils over here.

    Cheers

  6. This looks brilliant and outdoor fitness areas don't have to be expensive either - and yet the benefits far outweigh any costs. Every six minutes, for instance, someone is admitted to hospital for an osteoporotic fracture. This is crazy when so many instances could be prevented by the right kind of exercise - especially resistance training and anything high impact. Specialists want to see the public engage in something called "Walking Plus" which means walking with extra activity. In many places, such as Canberra, there are gym tracks where people are encouraged to stop to do step ups, chin ups, press ups, sit ups.... with instructions for all different levels. Gyms are great but it has also been shown that people enjoy exercise far more when it is outdoors in nature and preferably near to water - both assets that Warringah is blessed with.

  7. This would be excellent! In Brazil along beaches they have these and they are a great way to engage community, promote personal and group fitness and also "normalise' excercise into part of everyone's daily experience, - no more gym fees if you didn't want to !
